Guriezo

Guriezo is a municipal district in the Autonomous Region of Cantabria (Spain), which is a real must-see along the Northern Route of the Camino de Santiago or the Way of St. James (Stage 11 between Castro Urdiales and Laredo), located halfway along the section between Santander and Bilbao. It has a diverse historical and cultural heritage, and its classified properties and sites include the Church of Santa Catalina in Trebuesto (13th-18th centuries) and the Church of San Vicente de la Maza in Rioseco (17th-18th centuries). The area around the peak of Mount Las Nieves is also of interest thanks to its megalithic remains, the many chapels, including the one to be found at the top of Las Nieves, and the civil heritage houses still standing there, along with the forges that were the forerunners of Altos Hornos de Vizcaya.

This natural setting is home to the River Agüera Site of Community Importance in a Protected Natural Area of Cantabria, which was declared a SCI by the European Commission on 7 December 2004 and included in the network of Protected Natural Areas of Cantabria by the Cantabrian Nature Conservation Act 4/2004 of May.

It is mainly a river ecosystem, along with an estuary one, which is home to woods located in the headwaters of the river and along its banks, estuaries in intertidal silt zones and marine eelgrass meadows. The typical fauna associated to those areas can be found there, along with the birds that regularly stopover in the salt marshes on their migratory routes to the Santoña wetlands.

Along the edges and in the vicinity of the SCI, which borders with the Armañón natural park to the north, there are well-preserved stands of native trees, including, Cantabrian holm oak, oak and alder groves, without forgetting the eucalyptus woodland that were for the reason for its being called the "Green Gold Valley”. This all makes the Guriezo Royal Valley an ideal spot for enjoying the great outdoors, from hiking to observing nature, along with the tourist activities at the Oriñón beach and at the Arenillas beach next to the mouth of the River Agüera.
